I guess some would call them the ole ball and chain, or baggage, well in my case it was my soul mate. I can say that confidently and without hesitation because I have been with this man for 25 years. I actually met my husband when I was stationed in South Korea at my first duty station at Camp Casey. So yes we are both Army veterans and in some instances that would mean that we would butt heads all the time, but literally it’s the ultimate battle buddy relationship as far as spouses go. Of course I was only 18 when I went overseas and like many soldiers find out the hard way is when your so-called team is supposed to help you, but in my case that was not what happened, but we’ll get to that soon. I rolled into Camp Casey and when I hopped out of the van I just looked up, because they stated that I was on the 4th floor, so when I looked up I also saw Nick and I guess for him it was love at first sight, but me just looking at my surroundings. Then after that is when I would start trying to be what I would call my stalker. Yes, I married my stalker, but I or him did not know that 2nd Platoon for me was literally going to rape the shit out of me and just swept it under the rug. Aside from this incident happening, Nick has always kept me close and has tried to protect me, but there is only so much that he could do.
Eventually Nick would come back to the states and I was still in Korea for another 6 months, so I tried to stay sane and deal with all these flash backs. Of course when I felt like he was the one and I wanted to go further with the relationship, we had already been trying to have a child, but from everything I endured I would later find out that I was unable to produce children, but we never gave up. When I met my husband it was 2001. Which is the same year that I graduated and then when they sent me to Camp Red Cloud, my life got better because I found people that would help me and would be my true battles. I will never forget my buddy Tony, because he was the reason I made it through everything and I have helped him advance as well. After I came home from Korea in October I ended up flying to El Paso, Texas to start my new life, but we ended up getting married in Dona Ana County by a female judge, and we also got married in jeans and laughed the entire time that we were exchanging vows.
The next year in 2003 my husband and I decided to get married traditionally and this was performed by my uncle, a great and powerful medicine man. My uncle Roy was also a United States Navy veteran, so I have some of his strength. He was the most intelligent and highly educated by being a lawyer and I think he is the reason I have come so far, but after we were married traditionally we are still together today. 25 years together, 24 years married in December and then 23 years married traditionally. So far I have gone the distance and will continue to go this route, because my husband and I love each other, plus we finally created a miracle because my daughter is 22 now and she is just growing. Overall that is the journey in a nutshell. However, I am not going to say it’s been easy, but it’s work and well worth it if someone takes that time!
