Love now, Hated back then!

Daily writing prompt
What do you love now, that you hated when you were younger?

Hhhmmm, something I love now that I despised back then is the fact that I had never liked to eat Menudo, but I guess that was on account of there being tripe in plain sight. So most of the time I would eat around the tripe and just drink the soup and eat the hominy. In other words it took 10 years for me to get used to menudo and now it is one of my favorites with some good bread, chopped onions, cilantro, and lime. The closest I guess I got to this growing up is Posole. For us Natives, we like hominy, red chile, bits of pig and some pigsfeet. Yes I have always loved pigsfeet and to find out that my husband did not like that in the beginning either, but then it grew on him too. When we used to live in El Paso we got either my mother in laws menudo or a big pot that they would usually fill up on Sundays.

Now that we live here in Gallup, the best places to get menudo are two places and that is the flea market through a food truck called “El Gallitos” and they have other foods available, but this is usually our number one pick for menudo. The second place is along Route 66 and is run by one of our friends’ family and that is “Garcia’s”. Other than that we enjoy the more familiar stew such as beef stew, lamb, mutton stew, and my all time favorite the GOAT of stews and that is steamed corn stew, yummy. Of course there are various breads that go with these stews: either french bread, sopapilla, and the best bread is frybread. Plus you can also have frybread as a dessert just depending on the stuff you add to the bread. By this I mean that some people enjoy eating frybread with either honey or powdered sugar or both! There is no wrong way to eat frybread, just that you enjoy it!

Oooo I almost forgot to mention that there is also a third place that you can get menudo and they happened to have both red and green chile menudos. The place that I am referring to is Gerardo’s located on 6th street. Plus they have various other foods that they offer like the Mexi-burger, which is a burger that is served inside a sopapilla with fries and everything. Other than that you can’t go wrong when you are here in the Navajo Nation.
