Well this one is an easy question, because the one I looked up too after years of pain I realized that my Uncle Larry was the one that I would look up to. I mean he was a short man, but nothing about him was easy or simple looking. He seemed like he was just this little man that took care of his family as best he could. My dad is the oldest and then there was his sister Clarine, then Larry and finally the baby of the family named Julie. All Nelson’s and different lives. However, both sons would serve in the United States Army. One would be drafted and the other made the choice. In Larry’s case he was drafted in and was made to serve 12 years. Not just 12 years, but under the title of Special Forces. Once he got out I guess he went to school in California and eventually came back to Gallup to start his life working in CSR or what we would refer to as sterilization. So he worked on the 4th floor.
Now my dad was also in the Army, but in his case he chose his job and chose to fight in Vietnam. Which makes my dad Signal Corp. He did his basic training in Fort Bliss, Texas. After that he was stationed in Fort Gordon, Georgia through the Signal Corp. This is where I would end up eventually too, because I was always into electronics and computers. Even though I had a full ride to NMSU I had to continue the legacy as well as start my own, because I would then be the first and only female to be in the United States Army. I only served 18 months, but I saw enough to know what I was up against, but I did get to find the one. I just wished my uncle would have met his son-in-law. Either way I know he’s proud, just like my aunt Clarine. Like dad and uncle I started at the low end before I was able to move into an area that I could work.
At first I started as a Housekeeper, cleaning up after many messes, blood, patients, kids, etc. I did this for a few years because at one point someone came to me and said that they could use me in IT, but I would have to start taking classes. So in 2014 I decided to continue my education and enrolled in Information Technology. I earned my degree in 2015 and started to work as an IT Specialist and only for a couple weeks, but I accomplished the one thing I wanted and became the first female IT Specialist in the family. There are no IT people except me. Overall my uncle was the reason I pushed to get into a better place, because he showed me that it was possible. Thank you uncle, because without you I would have not done all my dreams and felt proud of what I have and will continue to accomplish.
