Thanksgiving in Hawaii!

Well I hate this holiday now, but the most memorable Thanksgiving I ever had was when my parents, and my aunt/uncle with their kids. This was in 1995, because I was 12 at the time and my brothers Ernie & Anson were there, along with their little sister Val. So we flew out of Phoenix to Oahu, Hawaii, which takes about 6 hours long. Once we land it is always customary that we be greeted and are given leis as well as a kiss on the cheek. From the airport we went straight to our hotel, which is just a walk away from the famous Waikiki beach. Of course I had been here before with just my parents, but now with my brothers. Now we’re all excited to start hitting the beach when we wind down a bit from the flight.

My dad was the one that was in charge of planning and booking various tours around the island as well as the Luaus that Germaine hosted. We took a bus tour around the island and sight see everywhere, because my aunt and her family had never been here before. There was even an arrangement for us to go snorkeling, but when we took the boat out, the waves were pretty rough, so we had to come back and I’m not sure if my dad got a refund or put toward something else. I mention this because my parents and sister decided to go see the Big Island Hawaii, but they would have to fly on a small plane. For me, no thank you, so I hung with my brothers.

If we weren’t at the beach we we’re definitely near the pool area, because they had an arcade there. This was when I heard the one song that reminds me of my brother Ernie and that is “Black Hole sun” by Soundgarden. Whenever I hear it I am always reminded that Ernie was my true brother. When we were here as well I started to pick up some new bad words and I would use them from there on out! Eventually when the trip was over, we went home and my school thought I was still absent, until I stepped out of the bleachers and onto the gym floor, because they were presenting the junior varsity players. I will always miss you Ernie.
